Dan’s Den

Daniel J. Fox, Superintendent

Welcome back! We are currently in full swing for another great year. Being part of a school district is always looking to the future and finding ways on how we can better the educational experience for our students.  This year is an exciting year for me personally.  I am planning on retiring after the 2023-2024 school year and the school board is being proactive in the transition with my retirement. For the past 15 years I have performed the duties of superintendent and elementary principal, the district will now transition into a sharing agreement with another district for the superintendent position and hiring a full-time elementary principal.

The transition started this summer with hiring a new elementary principal, Jacklyn Letzring.  During this school year the district will be in talks with another district our size on working through a sharing agreement where the superintendent position will be half-time in each district – this sharing agreement will happen during the 2023-2024 school year.  This format is very common among districts our size (NL/MV, Starmont/WC, Lisbon/Springville to name a few in our conference). With this new format we will go from 2 full-time administrators to 2.5 full-time. Another advantage with sharing the superintendent position the district will receive sharing dollars from the state to help offset costs.

Leader In Me Initiative

This summer the East Buchanan Community District started the Initiative with Leader In Me (LIM). LIM is a PK-12 transformation process.  It is an evidence-based comprehensive model that builds leadership and life skills in students, creates a high-trust school culture, and lays the foundation for sustained academic achievement.  This past summer we started with our lighthouse group meeting back in June.  This consisted of a group of elementary staff members to help drive the elementary and two groups at the MS/HS level – one group being staff members and the second group being students.

Tuesday, August 16th was planned to be our first All Staff professional development day to learn more about LIM with our staff learning about the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People along with a second day on Monday, Oct 3rd.  The people at LIM had issues with their flight back in August, so that day was postponed to Monday, October 3rd.  The second day is now scheduled for the Tuesday, November 22nd.  On the calendar this was an early out professional development day, now it will be an all-day professional development day with No School.  (Correction in Calendar – Tuesday, November 22nd is a No School Day for ALL Staff PD).

Construction Update

The construction is turning out very well.  It was a rough start with weather and getting things delivered on time, but it looks great.  Things that took place this past spring and summer  – 1) new softball dugouts 2) safety net along baseball 3) new concession stand/rest rooms with wrap around deck/retaining wall 4) new storage shed on the westside of football bleachers.  Yet to come this fall – waiting on baseball bleachers and away football bleachers.  Starting next spring the construction of the new all-weather 4 lane practice track with be installed.  Next spring, we will also discuss the final layout of the new maintenance building that will set south of the Kids’ Corner facility.  This will replace the old bus barn.

Visitors

Again, this year – ALL VISITORS NEED TO REPORT TO EITHER THE HS OFFICE OR ELEMENTARY/CENTRAL OFFICE AS THEY ENTER THE BUILDING.  As our world is changing, so are we.  For safety, all visitors will need to report to one of the offices as they enter the building.  We will have limited access to our building throughout the day.  We will have ID badges for visitors, mentors and volunteers that have a purpose for being in the building.  If students are coming to school late, they can be dropped off at the office by parents.  We are looking to keep our students and staff safe, and one way is by limiting and identifying the visitors in our building.

Volunteers/Mentors

We as a district are always welcoming volunteers/mentors to help with students and staff.  If you would like more information please call the office, 319-935-3660 or email Kelly Henderson at khenderson@east-buc.k12.ia.us
