Basic Function: To assist teachers in leading students toward the fulfillment of their potential for intellectual, emotional, and psychological growth and maturation.
Essential Functions: Performance of these functions is the reason the job exists. They are essential for one or more of the following reasons:
- The number of employees available to perform the function is limited.
- The function requires specialized skills.
- The function occupies a large percentage of time.
- Failure to perform the function may have serious consequences.
- Assist the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.
- Help students master equipment or instructional materials assigned by the teacher.
- Guide independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up and assigned by the teacher.
- Assist with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips.
- Read to students, listen to students read, and participate in other forms of oral communication with students.
- Assist students in the library or media center.
- Help students with their clothing.
- Assist with lunch, snack, and clean-up routines.
- Assist with wash-up and toilet routines.
- Alert the teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student.
- Serve as a source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.
- Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of fully licensed teachers.
- Participate in in-service training programs, as assigned.
- Discuss assigned area with classroom teacher to coordinate instructional efforts.
- Under the supervision and with instruction of the teacher, assist in individual and small and large group support.
- Supervise students on the playground, in the lunchroom, restrooms, halls, media center and in those areas as requested.
- Monitor classes during teacher absences of short duration.
- Assist in the office as requested.
- Understand, support and implement accommodations within a student’s IEP.
- Be patient with students utilizing firmness, friendliness and fairness; consistently follow through with behavior management plan.
- Know emergency procedures for the building and classrooms within which you work.
- Contribute to an effective and efficient school district.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle and/or feel objects, tools, or controls; talk and hear. The employee frequently must squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and forward 0 – 24 inches and on occasion up to 36 inches. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp items. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds 0 – 12 feet and occasionally up to 20 feet, such as desks, chairs, and boxes. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables and carts. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus while supervising students and working with computers, written materials, reports, assessment data, etc.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet. The position requires the commitment of professional working hours that may require the employee to extend beyond a typical 8 hour workday. The employee will frequently work in different areas of the classroom including in/at desks, on or near the floor, standing, in movement while supervising indoor and outdoor activities, etc. The employee will usually work in indoor temperatures but will work outdoors when supervising playground and transportation activities and while on field trips.
