About the District
The East Buchanan School District serves the communities of Aurora, Monti, Quasqueton, and Winthrop. The district covers 137 square miles and enrolls 550 students. The professional staff includes 1 superintendent/elementary principal in a combined position, 1 middle/high school principal, 1 part-time School Improvement Facilitator, 1 Technology Director, 2 Guidance Counselors, 45 teachers, and a 42-member support staff. All figures include AEA personnel housed in the district. Community support is provided by the PT0, Music Boosters, Buccaneer Boosters, Funds for the Future, Buccaneer Foundation, and an extensive volunteer/mentoring program.
The East Buchanan Community School District was formed as a result of a vote which took place on December 3, 1959. This vote involved 9 school districts (Aurora Independent, Buffalo Township, Byron Township, Jefferson Township, Middlefield Township, Quasqueton Consolidated, Richardson Township, Union Township and Winthrop Consolidated), 6 rural areas and 3 communities. The voters approved the formation of the new school district by a vote of 637 to 127.
When East Buchanan first became one school district, the 3 school buildings in Aurora, Quasqueton and Winthrop were used to hold the enrollment of 982 students. K-6 were housed in Aurora, K-8 in Quasqueton and K-12 in Winthrop. As enrollment has changed so has the building facilities. Today, district instructional programs are housed in a K-12 building located in Winthrop facility. In the fall of 2001, East Buchanan was awarded a "Vision Iowa" Grant. This grant was used for the construction of a new K-12 Library Media Center, an open access 30 station Computer Lab, a multipurpose room and an extensive renovation project designed to make the facility handicapped-acccessible.
The district food service serves an average 472 lunches per day. The district operates 6 regular bus routes.
The East Buchanan District is affiliated with Area Education Agency 267 and the Tri-Rivers Conference. The latter is an activity conference comprised of nine member schools. Other Tri-Rivers schools include: Alburnett, Cascade, Central City, Edgewood-Colesburg, Maquoketa Valley, Monticello, North Linn, Springville and Starmont.
East Buchanan students enjoy technology that serves their real world needs for today and tomorrow. The 6 to12 students utilize Chromebooks daily as part of a 1:1 initative. The Prek - 5 classrooms utilize not only 4-5 desktop computers in each classroom, but also share 2 mobile computer labs. The district maintains a robust wireless network supported by a 70 Meg internet connection. Software programs utilized by the district include: iWork, iLife, Microsoft Office, and curriculum specific applications. An integral part of services provided for our staff and students is provided by a core of students (the Tech Team) enrolled in an Independent Study Program.

YEARLY ASBESTOS NOTIFICATION 2024-2025
By: Mike Kerkove, Asbestos Program Manager
The East Buchanan Community School District is required to provide annual notification concerning asbestos in our school buildings. Our school facilities were initially inspected by a certified asbestos inspector, as required by AHERA (Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act). The inspector located, sampled and determined the condition and hazard potential of all material in our buildings suspected of containing asbestos. The inspection and laboratory analysis records form the basis of the asbestos management plan. A copy of the management plan is available for your inspection. Please make an appointment during office hours (8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) if you wish to review this plan. Copies of the plan may be made at a cost of .15¢ per page.
Periodic surveillance of the areas containing asbestos is conducted once every six months. These surveillance reports then become a part of the management plan. A three- year re-inspection of all our facilities was completed in 2022.
The East Buchanan Community School District will continue its in-place management program and will take whatever steps are necessary to ensure that our students and employees have a healthy and safe environment in which to learn and work.
